22 November 2016. 2nd Round of the Kent Reliance Senior Cup competition. Welling win on penalties.
Tony Burman had changed his side up once again bringing in Bailey Vose as goalkeeper and dropping Deren Ibrahim to the bench for the match; however an administration error with the registration paperwork for Vose meant Burman had to readjust his chosen starting eleven with Ibrahim moving in to start and academy player Tony Coxall was named on the bench. Burman also handed starts to Kaka Dembele, Ellis Brown and Ben Francis, with the bench being made up of Danny Harris, Andy Pugh, Alex Brown and Tom Gardiner.
Welling made it through to the Quarter Finals of the Kent Senior cup knocking out present holders Dartford on penalties. It wasn’t pretty, but The Wings will look to take some confidence from this victory. In the first half, Welling conceded a penalty. Ryan Hayes was going away from goal when Matt Fish clipped him in the area, Hayes picked himself up and coolly dispatched his penalty bringing the score to 1:1.
Later Deren Ibrahim bravely claimed a free kick at the feet of Rickie Hayles, but Ibrahim received a knock in the goal mouth scramble and was unfortunately stretched off, Hayles and Bonner were booked for their part in the melee that followed. Tony Coxall stepped up as substitute goalkeeper. The match was at 2:2 when in stoppage time Christian Nanetti was clipped by Tom Wynter for a penalty. Upstepped Sam Hatton to win it for Welling, but he blasted the ball over the bar and out of the ground into Danson Park - so ironically the game was now to be decided on a penalty shoot out. Welling were the winners, their goalkeeper saving 2 shots.
In the intermission while Deren Ibrahim was being attended to, one of the Welling players was about to skip off the pitch to the dressing rooms. The assistant referee saw him and asked where he thought he was going. "I need the toilet". "Sorry, you can't step off the field of play. If you go, you can't come back on". Just like in school, the player ambled back onto the pitch. I guess he had to last until half-time!
